Habitat: grows on shallow organic soils accumulated on nearly horizontal rock surfaces, in shaded sites inside a well preserved Atlantic Forest fragment, it forms large and very dense groups of plants, completely covering the ground, ca. 200 ? m. Elev. img

Etymology: The name of Cryptanthus proliferus is based on the Latin word proliferus, meaning to reproduce or grow rapidly. It is a reference to something that reproduces or increases abundantly, like the new species that propagates by some long and slender rhizomes and forms dense groups of plants.
