Type: MEXICO. Quintana Roo: Municipio Othon P. Blanco, Ejido Caobas, Sabana del Jaguactal, un desvio de 9.5 km por carretera de terraceria al oeste de la carretera hacia Tres Garantias, unos 21 km al sur de la carretera principal desde Xpujil a Chetumal, aprox. 18°18'00"N, 89º07'00"W, flowered under cultivation in Merida Yucatan, Mexico, Agosto 10 de 1998, G. Carnevali, F. May-Pat, and M. Gomez 5094a (Holotype: CICY).

Etymology: the specific epithet honors Filogonio May-Pat, of Mayan ancestry, a technician member of the herbarium CICY staff. and one of the most knowledgeable collectors of the Yucatan Flora, who participated in the collection of the type material.
