Etymology: The new Pitcairnia is dedicated to Frau Hannelore (Loki) Schmidt, Bonn/Hamburg, not only because she discovered the plant but also as acknowledgment for her stand towards conservation and to the protection of the native plant world. ;
Phenology: Flowers smell like an unripe apple, postfloral bent downwards. Night flowering.
