Etymology: Vriesea fontellana is named in honor of the botanist Dr. Jorge Fontella Pereira. Dr. Fontella had the position of Director of Herbarium Bradeanum, in Rio de Janeiro State, up to: 2003. He was responsible for the administrative reorganization of that institution, promoting favorable conditions for preserving its nearly 100,000 botanical samples
