11154 - Bromeliads (Wild) - 2013-10-25 (Dimension: 1302 x 2050 pixels - Counter: 15396) Tillandsia raackii Locality: Ecuador - Loja - Approximately 38 km south of Yangana in Loja province of Ecuador. Original collection in 1990 with Jeffery Kent. Subsequent collection in April 1997 with Jose Manzanares. Photographer: Jerry Raack Note: I'm providing these photos of Tillandsia raackii in the wild taken in 1997 so everyone can see the habitat, growth size and differences in specimens seen at the site. In cultivation for me, it fails to obtain the vivid red coloration seen on the specimens I have shown here. Pitcairnia alata grows in the same area. The elevation was approximately 6000 ft. The largest speciman seen had 9 spikes on the inflorescence. Flowers do not fully open, but stay closed. We say hummingbirds visiting these plants.
