13740 - Bromeliads (Wild) - 2018-03-17 (Dimension: 2030 x 1550 pixels - Counter: 11115) Tillandsia biflora Locality: Ecuador, Loja Province - Road Quebrad to Chuquiral, east off Hwy 35, East of Santiago at elevation 2479 meters. Growing epiphytically in the trees along the Rio Santiago. Photographer: Jerry Raack Note: One of the most beautiful of all small Tillandsia is this species growing to about 25 cm across. This is a species which is highly variable with respect to the foliage. The Encylopedia of Bromeliads (online) shows a form with solid lime-green leaves, while this clone I picture here has highly spotted leaves. I also encountered this growing in Morona-Santiago Province on this trip which had leaves colored a solid pink color (I will upload one of these photos for comparison). The form with the spotted foliage was growing in a tree with T. clavigera and T. porphyrocraspeda. I have grown this form with the spotted foliage in 4 inch pots in my greenhouse in the Columbus, Ohio area for about 5 years now, so does take to culture, and it does retain all of the spots on its leaves even under low light conditions. The same can not be said for the pink-leaved form which requires bright light to maintain its leaf color. (Sent: brom-l@science.uu.nl) (Click on the picture to enlarge) |
